Get Up Close with Gannet Safaris Tours

An adventure in itself, you will safari over to the picturesque Cape Kidnappers Station over traversing riverbeds, broad rolling pastures, steep gullies, and the most breathtaking 360 degree views of Hawke’s Bay and beyond.

With no walking required, you will reach New Zealand’s largest privately-owned nature reserve – an untouched paradise for wildlife. Gannets, and other rare bird species have a secure space to live freely and to roam through the reserve.

Choose between 4 of our regular tours or book a school tour to discover the natural beauty of Cape Kidnappers and the habitat of the Gannets.

You are welcome to join our daily tours which run twice a day, at 9.30 am and 1.30 pm.

A 2015 study indicated that in the next 25 years, 99% of seabirds will be exposed to plastic ingestion. With 11 million tonnes of plastic entering our Oceans every year, plastic pollution is likely to pose the biggest threat to seabird conservation. As the conservation spotlight shines on New Zealand`s predator free 2050 goal, it`s important to remind ourselves about the other aspects of conservation. Reducing plastic waste by seeking paper/ re-usable alternatives, signing petitions on reducing plastic manufacturing within Aotearoa/ New Zealand and participating in local waterway clean up days are a few simple steps we can take to improve the habitat for our precious birdlife.

Ever wondered how a #gannet nest is made?

In late winter and early spring, the Takapū/ Australasian gannets are often sighted flying around with seaweed - a key component in their nest structure. By use of a build up of guano, nutrient packed excrement, the gannets form a concrete like cylindrical wall that is softened with seaweed. These nests are incredibly resilient and can last for years!

Only the males return with seaweed, a helpful tip for distinguishing sexes.
